1 out of 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives (source IKNL). And the brutal reality is that we have no choice to decide if it will be you or me. Instead of waiting to find out, I have decided to actively contribute in a fundraiser called Alpe d’Huzes (Alpe d'HuZes (opgevenisgeenoptie.nl)) together with team Climb 4 Cure
Alpe d'HuZes is a unique sporting event that raises as much money as possible for cancer research and to improve the quality of life of people with cancer. On the first Thursday in June (6th), 5,000 participants will climb the Alpe d'Huez, a mountain in the French Alps, by bicycle, running or walking. The road to the summit has 21 turns and is 14.5 kilometers long. The altitude difference between start and finish is 1,100 meters with an average ascent of 7.9%.
My reasoning behind my participation is not only the many people that I know that have suffered or are still suffering from cancer, but also since a person with cancer has no choice to take a day off while battling this horrible decease. So I decided to approach it the other way around and make the choice to exert myself by climbing the mountain in order to collect as much money as possible.
UPDATE: Unfortunate circumstances prevent me from participating in the event myself, but I am incredibly proud to announce that our son will be taking over my registration and doing the climb on my behalf.
